The Physics Education Research Group is an integral part of the Department of Physics and Materials Science. The research focus is on interplays between the experience of student learning and the learning environment. This includes the form and content of university physics curricula and teaching. The conceptual and theoretical framing draw on methodology that is typically anchored in attributes such as social identity, epistemology, metacognition, language, gender, visualization, simulation, culture and worldview. Three PhD positions at the Department of Theology

Application for a place on the programme for studies at research level at the Faculty of Theology for the year 2009 should be made on the form intended for the purpose. Applications can be made for studies in the following subjects: History of Religions, Psychology of Religion, Old Testament Exegetics, Church History, Ecclesiology, Studies of Mission, Ethics, Philosophy of Religion

PhD position in computational materials science

The PhD student will perform the theoretical studies of ion conducting materials. The models to be used are based on density functional theory, total energy calculations, electronic structure, phonon spectra, molecular dynamics simulations, Monte Carlo simulations and analytical work with model Hamiltonians. Methods used for the electronic structure/phonon spectra total energy studies are; linear muffin-tin orbital methods (ASA, full charge density and full potential), projector-augmented wave potentials, molecular dynamics. PhD of Electronic structure and optical properties of heterogeneous quantum dot nanomaterials: theory and modeling

The project will take place within the Marie Curie Initial Training Network HERODOT: “Heterogeneous quantum rod and quantum dot nanomaterials – Towards a novel generation of photonic devices” (FP7). The network creates a multidisciplinary training and research environment on the electro‐optical properties of hybrid nanomaterials and their applications in photonics. It consists of 6 research partners and 2 industrial partners (listed below) with complementary background in physical chemistry, experimental physics, theoretical physics and opto–electronic engineering. A Ph.D. studentship (or a 1 year postdoc contract) is available to start October 2008 or before.

The project concerns the transport of volatiles (esp. water) at subduction zone. The effects of slab dehydration on the mantle wedge dynamics will be studied within the framework of two-phase flow theory and by the way of numerical modelling. The goal of the research is to improve our understanding on fluid transport from a subducting slab to its visible surface consequence: from dehydration (earthquake) to arc volcanism. PhD position AMC Medical Research B.V.

Job description

A growing number of children are exposed to medicines that act upon the central nervous system. Curiously enough most of these medicines have only been tested in adults, and therefore little is known about their side effects in children. This project investigates the long-term effects of several medicines on brain development. The hypothesis is that they influence normal outgrowth of the brain. Molecular mechanisms that control neuroadaptational processes will be analyzed using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), pharmacological MRI (phMRI) in particular. The candidate is expected to manage, perform and analyse (ph)MRI studies. This project is a collaboration with the MRC Clinical Sciences Centre, Imperial College London, UK where the candidate will be able to spend one year working on phMRI. Read the rest of this entry »
